There he wrote for a student newspaper several feuilletons and a poem about the life of gymnasium students. But when Garshin was 15 years old, the training had to be interrupted for six months: the future writer had a hereditary mental illness, and he went to the hospital for a long time.

Despite this, in the year Vsevolod Garshin graduated from a gymnasium, which by that time was renamed the St. Petersburg First Real School. In the same year, Garshin entered the Mining Institute in St. Petersburg. But he was more attracted to literature than the profession of an engineer. The work was based on memoirs from the times of life with a father in the Yekaterinoslav province.

Stories about a man in the war in April of the year began another war between Russia and the Ottoman Empire. As soon as Vsevolod Garshin found out about this, he immediately left his studies and went to the front as a volunteer. In August of the same year, he was injured and hit the hospital, and then resigned for health reasons. The hero of the work was a wounded Russian soldier who could not move and was left alone on the battlefield.

The flask of water, which he found at the killed Turk, helped him hold out for four days until the help came up. In Autobiography, Garshin wrote about the creation of the story: “The reason for this was the real case, I will say with one of the soldiers of our regiment, by the way that I myself never experienced anything like that, since after the wound I was immediately taken out of fire.” The story “Four Days” was released in the literary journal “Domestic Notes”, critics responded positively about it.

Even during the life of the author, the work was translated into several foreign languages and published abroad. In the hospital, Vsevolod Garshin met his future wife - a graduate of obstetric courses Nadezhda Zolotilova. Together with her, the writer returned to St. Petersburg after resignation, entered a free listener to the philological faculty of St. Petersburg University, but after six months he left his studies.

At the end of X, Garshin conceived several stories about wartime, which were supposed to enter the “People and War” cycle. He came to Loris-Melikov for an audience to ask for a pardon for the criminal sentenced to death.

The writer believed that the execution would not stop terror and entail other crimes. But the request was in vain, Mlodetsky was executed. After that, Garshin had a strong aggravation of mental illness, he was treated in psychiatric clinics of Kharkov and St. Petersburg, and then restored mental health in the estate of relatives. The wife helped him in difficult times, was a nurse and secretary.

In the work, he showed how the disease develops and symptoms appear from the point of view of the patient. The writer remembered what happened to him during psychosis, some details in the story were autobiographical. According to the plot, it seemed to the patient that he should fight all evil of the world, which was embodied in red flowers in the hospital garden. The work was included in the first collection of the writer “Stories”, it was released in the year.

The book caused ambiguous responses, some critics reproached the writer with excessive gloomy and pessimism. The writer committed suicide and died on April 5.
